Joe Alwyn Continues to Play Coy Regarding Taylor Swift Engagement Rumors

Even if Joe Alwyn and Taylor Swift are engaged, the actor isn’t about to share it with the rest of us.

The Conversations with Friends star was once again asked about his relationship with the singer-songwriter and whether or not they plan to marry in an interview for WSJ. Magazine‘s May issue. The couple has been plagued by engagement rumors from the very start of their relationship, which began in 2016. This is why Alwyn joked in reply to once again being asked about their relationship status, “If I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins.” He went on to answer a little more seriously, “I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn’t say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn’t say.”

The actor also noted that he feels no obligation to talk about his private life just because he and his girlfriend are public figures. “We live in a culture that people expect so much to be given,” he told the magazine. “So that if you’re not posting all the time about what you’re doing, how you’re spending a day or how you made a breakfast, does that make you a recluse?” But Alwyn went on to admit that there are moments when he feels like his attitude towards the press and his fans is “just a knee-jerk response to the culture we live in” and he’d “like to feel slightly less guarded sometimes in interviews or in whatever kind of interactions.” However, he pointed out that “If you give it to them, it just opens the door.”

The Grammy award winner has expressed similar sentiments in the past regarding his high-profile, yet very private relationship with Swift. Last April, in an interview with Elle UK, Alwyn confessed that he doesn’t understand why people find their desire for privacy so unusual. “It’s not really [because I] want to be guarded and private, it’s more a response to something else,” he explained. “We live in a culture that is so increasingly intrusive…The more you give–and frankly, even if you don’t give it–something will be taken.” And prior to that, in 2018, he also pointed out to GQ that “Someone’s private life is, by definition, private. No one is obliged to share their personal life.”
