Throughout Prince Andrew’s years of public scrutiny and legal woes, the prince still remained close to his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who reportedly considered him her favorite child. But now that we are a few months into the reign of King Charles III, Andrew’s already tenuous role in the palace hierarchy is slipping even further. On Wednesday, The Sun reported that Andrew has been asked to vacate the Buckingham Palace apartment he has occupied for decades.
“The King has made it clear that Buckingham Palace is no place for Prince Andrew,” a source told the tabloid. “First, his office closed last year and now his sleeping quarters.”
He won’t be out in the cold entirely. He is still roommates with ex-wife Sarah Ferguson at Royal Lodge, the home on Windsor Great Park that used to belong to the Queen Mother. The Sun adds that he does have the option of moving to a suite at St. James Palace, where his daughter Princess Beatrice has a four-room apartment. (Vanity Fair has reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment.)
Andrew moved into the suite in the 1980s, and it is also the place where palace maids were reportedly asked to rearrange his collection of teddy bears daily. “Andrew loved having a suite at Buckingham Palace where he was not only set up for marital life with Sarah Ferguson but used it as a bachelor’s pad after his divorce,” the source told the Sun. “He brought back a string of new girlfriends to his home in the Palace—even model Caprice. A bachelor’s flat in St James’s Palace doesn’t have the same allure for a single man.”
In 2020, The Sun reported that Andrew’s dates with Caprice, who might be best known in America for her appearance on VH1’s The Surreal Life in 2005, happened “less than a year before he is alleged to have slept with 17-year-old Virginia Roberts.” A source close to the model told the tabloid about her time in the palace. “He took her to Buckingham Palace twice, and on one occasion she sat on the Queen’s throne,” the source said. “She spotted a bowl she liked and asked Andrew if she could steal it and post it to her mum. She claims that he let her, and her mum loved it!”
